Ethnolinguistic groups

A people rather than a place. Each group carries its own coordinates and, if you draw one, a settlement area — the administrative units it lives in, clicked on the map. Adjacent units merge into one shape because they already share their borders.

Distance result curation

Add a matching phrase to control whether references merge or appear in regular results, and optionally set a map pin. Give multiple rules the same merge name to combine them. Hidden references continue contributing to the heat overlay. Rules apply to sample names and labels; the most specific matching phrase wins.

Current distance result rules

Combined under one visible name: Georgian, Turkish, Kurdish Kurmanji, Kurdish Sorani, Ezidi, Persian, Armenian, Azeri, Talysh, Lak, Lur, Iraq Arab, Kurdish Yarsani, Syrian Arab and Zaza.

Combined and visible in regular results and pins: Assyrian, Alawite, Kurdish Feyli/Fayli and Bedouin Syria. Greek Western Kars/Erzurum remains combined and hidden from the regular list and pins.

Hidden without merging: Nusayri/Nusrayi, Mandaean, Iranian Zoroastrian, Qizilbash, Bandari, Tat Azerbaijan, Mountain Jew, Balochi Iran, Sephardic Jew and Kawliya Iraq. Balochi Iran still contributes to the heat overlay. Afro Syrian Arab is excluded from results.

Curated map locations: Sabbatean is placed in Istanbul; Sephardic Jew is assigned to Izmir but currently hidden.
